In response to the recent unclear situation regarding the aerosols containing propellants, we would hereby like to inform you further.

In aerosols like baking spray and coloring spray different propellants can be used. These propellants ensure that the can remains under pressure. This way the content of the can flows out of the can more easily. There have been questions raised regarding the safety of certain propellants, namely:

• E943a Butane
• E943b Isobutane
• E944 Propane

In the European legislation it has been regulated which additives are allowed for usage in foods. After a thorough safety and risk analyses by the European Union additives that are deemed safe will be assigned an e-number. The above mentioned three propellants are allowed according to this legislation. This means that the propellants are safe for use.

For some propellants there are specific regulative conditions of use prescribed in the legislation. This is the case for the propellants mentioned. The propellants used in baking and coloring sprays have restrictive usage. The additive legislation states that the sprays can only be used “professionally”. There is some uncertainty on what “professional use” actually means. It is regulated that “professional use” directs certain guidelines for the time between spraying the product and consumption. According to these guidelines the product has to evaporate for an hour after spraying, so the propellants are completely vaporized to the maximum dosage of 1 mg/kg.

Because we want to inform our customers properly, we have decided together with our suppliers that we will only offer the above-mentioned sprays containing these propellants “only for professional use”. We want to emphasize that these products are not suitable and destined to be sold to the consumer.
