How to Colour the Perfect Buttercream

If you love working with buttercream, these tips will help you unlock the magic of achieving the boldest colours with Colour Mill Oil Blends.

Prime your buttercream

If your buttercream has a yellowish tint, start by colour correcting with Colour Mill’s Oil Blend White before adding any colour. Stir in 2-5% of White Oil Blend to banish yellow undertones. This ensures your buttercream will take on the bold colours you desire!

Get brighter buttercream with less colouring

When using Colour Mill's formula, just 5 drops per 100g of buttercream is all you need. By weighing your buttercream, you'll ensure the closest match to the label colours every time!

Don’t want to weigh your buttercream but still want control over colour intensity? Use a toothpick to apply the colour. Simply dip the toothpick into the lid of your bottle, remove it, and swirl it into your buttercream. It’s that simple! This method works best for smaller batches.

Gone a little overboard with the colour? No worries! You can lighten the buttercream by blending in more plain buttercream or adding a splash of White Oil Blend.

Get the Brightest Colours in Your Chocolate

When it comes to colouring chocolate, it’s important to neutralize those yellow tones. Add 2-5% of Colour Mill Oil Blend White to your melted chocolate before adding any colour to get the perfect base.

A little colour goes a long way with chocolate. Adding too much too quickly can cause your melted chocolate to seize. Add a few drops at a time to achieve the perfect colour. For more control, use the toothpick method, and follow the colour-to-chocolate ratio below:

  • Want to neutralize? Use 4g of White Oil Blend to 100g of chocolate.
  • Want to match the label? Use 4 drops of Colour Mill Oil Blend per 100g of chocolate.
  • Gone overboard? Simply add a splash of White Oil Blend to lighten your coloured chocolate

Working with Sugar Paste

The easiest and most efficient way to colour sugar paste is with the toothpick method. Insert a toothpick into the lid of your Colour Mill Oil Blend bottle, swipe the colour off the toothpick, and knead it into your sugar paste.

Used too much colour and your sugar paste is too dark? Simply knead in some uncoloured fondant to lighten it up, and you’re good to go!
